Researching a Debt Reduction Company
On previous pages of this site, we've suggested that when you're looking for a debt reduction company, you should ask a lot of questions like these:
Is the company certified and accredited?
Do they have a physical street address?
How will your progress with your creditors be tracked?
How does your program work?
What's your fee structure?
You're lucky that you live in an era of the Internet when such information is readily available. You can find out how long the debt reduction company in question has been in business, if anyone has lodged complaints against them with the Better Business Bureau, etc.
The reason you ask a lot of the questions listed above are obvious in some cases, but do you know why you should ask if there's a physical street address? Some fly-by-night debt reduction companies in the past would operate out of someone's basement with only a post office box to collect their money. Nobody ever met them face to face. If the debt reduction company you choose doesn't have a physical street address, eliminate them from your list.
The reason you should ask how your progress will be tracked and about the fees is because some debt reduction companies will take your first month's payments as their fee. While this may be fine, you might be under the impression that the payment went to your creditors, when in reality they are waiting for your monthly payment and you'll be a month behind.
If the debt reduction company you choose hesitates to answer these or any other questions you have about their debt reduction service, don't choose them. You need a debt reduction company that isn't afraid to answer your questions or help you. Your credit history is at stake here--be very protective of it. If you do, and you find the right debt reduction company, they can have you on the road to becoming debt free.
